Why volunteer at your children’s school? Here’s my reason: The school administrators and teachers have the enormous task of providing an education for my children. How could I possibly express my admiration, gratitude, and love for them? The only way I can think of is to support them through my talents, to serve them as they serve my children.
Teachers and administrators need our support. I’m sure it’s horrible feeling when you feel as if what you do does not matter. It must be frustrating to feel as though you cannot reach a child. It has to take a toll when you get nothing back but negativity.
It is the power of parent support that keeps our principals, administration personnel, and especially the teachers energized. It is the charge to their batteries, and it’s something that we as parents can provide time over.
Offer your help. Everyone will be so grateful. There are many things you can fit in your schedule.
- Send healthy snacks.
- Share an idea.
- Suggest something to make a teacher’s life easier.
- Organize a field trip.
- Chaperone a field trip.
- Set up for the class party.
- Help fundraisers.
- Make copies.
- Attend PTO meetings.
Also ask teachers if they need something for their classrooms. Do you know how much teachers spend on supplies out of their own pockets?
Here are the ones I hear the most though:
Make sure your child does the homework and is prepared for class. And bring them to school on time.
Your support of your school directly impacts your child. And after all, isn’t your child’s education the most important investment you’ll make for them? Lead by serving.

AMEN!!! Well said, Sally. I’m a firm believer in volunteering at school. Another great reason to do so….you get to spend time watching your child learn and grow. Also, whether intentional or not, teachers seem to pay a little more attention to the children that have very involved parents. They know it will matter to the parents if the children are doing well or not since the parents take time out of their busy schedules to help out at school. This is my 5th year being Room Mother and it takes a lot of time away from my work/home life but it’s worth every minute. Thanks for reminding us about the little things that matter the most! Have a great week.
