Growing up, my mom didn’t cook breakfast. We toasted Pop-Tarts, poured cereal, made toast, or — my favorite — eat cookies and cake and drank tall glasses of milk.
Her breakfast of choice was chocolate milk. Every morning, I would hear her slippers shuffle down the hall to the kitchen, the pantry door squeak open and close, the knock of the glass being placed on the counter, and the clickity clankity of the spoon scraping the sides of the glass as the chocolate powder mixture blended with the milk. Once it was mixed to her satisfaction, she would always take a taste from the spoon before placing the spoon in the sink.
Do you know I too take a taste from the spoon after I mix my chocolate milk? And would you be surprised to learn that for years Diva refused her chocolate milk unless I let her taste it with the spoon first? And now Manchild requests a taste from the spoon too?
It’s funny what gets passed down from parent to child, and I could go on and on about how children learn more from our actions than our words. But today I’d like to share with you this important lesson instead – it doesn’t take a perfect mom to be a Supermom.
You see, my mom didn’t make the June Cleaver breakfast for us. And I don’t make it for my children either except when time allows on the weekends or on holidays. And let’s face it, you know James really cooks in this house, so it’s not me being June Cleaver in any sense of the word.
But that’s just it. Being June Cleaver or the idea of June Cleaver is not what makes us Supermoms. It’s being ourselves and loving our children unconditionally, imperfections and all that makes us Supermoms, even when you serve chocolate milk for breakfast.
So today let’s cut ourselves some slack. Cheers!

When I was growing up “a mouse” ate a bite of EVERY sandwich! We still tease my mom today!
LOVE IT!!! Who ever said you had to perfect to be a supermom anyway???
