Don't Wake The Kids

And Other Rules for Motherhood

Don’t Get Lost in the Shuffle

MP900444333We all know it’s important to make time for ourselves. But it’s the how to make time for ourselves that escapes us.

If you’re idea of making time for yourself is the one time of the day you lock yourself in the bathroom to check your Facebook feed (guilty), then it’s time to figure out a way to get some me time.

Let’s begin with something simple.

Journal.

MP900439466I carry a journal with me at all times. Usually I make lists of things to do when I’m overwhelmed, but that’s just what the journal is for. A brain dump. Get it on paper. It makes things easier to analyze and less overwhelming. Just this week, I was lamenting over how to get work done, shuttle kids, and juggle my multitude of responsibilities. When I finally made a plan and got it on paper, it was like a weight lifted off me. I could literally breathe easier.

I also usually have a running to-do list in my brain. I just simply write in my journal, and I know it’s somewhere safe and not going to get muddled with the barrage of requests I face on daily basis.

So you buy a journal. Now what? Carry it with you everywhere and sneak in some time to write in it. In line at the bank drive through. Waiting in carpool. After dropping off the children at school in the morning. Lunch time at your desk. Waiting for football/dance practice.

Start with your dreams. Remember those?

OK. Start with your grocery list.

Either way, you never know where it will take you.
