Valentine’s Day is coming up. It’s typically a day to celebrate our love with the special people in our lives. And if you’re in elementary school, that means a party; if you’re in middle school, it’s just a day with a little candy on the side.
As the room mother for Manchild’s class, I’m in charge for planning the class party. His teacher gave me a couple files of Valentine’s craft ideas she’s collected over the years. In it, I found a magazine excerpt she copied years ago, “A Designer Original,” by Fay Angus. I never expected a God Breeze from an old manila folder.
It begins
O Lord…thank You for making me so wonderfully complex! It is amazing to think about. Your workmanship is marvelous… – Psalm 139:1,14
The author relays a story of personal revelation from the simple thankful prayer of her six-year-old son.
After he had duly thanked God for the food and the highlights of his day, he paused – and then added, “And thank You, God, for the nice little boy You gave this family!”
“Nice little boy!” I gasped. “Where?”
“Right here,” he grinned, pointing to himself. “I was thanking God for me!”
The author wondered why it had never occurred to her to thank God for creating her. I too wondered why I had never thanked God for me. I thank Him for my friends and family, for the blessings He has bestowed on me. Why not for me?
Is this another manifestation of my negative self-talk? My self-doubt?
Certainly I believe God’s creations are divine and beautiful and loved by Him. Would it not then follow that as I am one His creations, I am divine and beautiful and loved by Him? And if I am loved by God, then I am enough, and I should love myself.
So on this Valentine’s Day, a day we shower our cherished ones with affection, let’s not forget ourselves. I think I’ll start with letting go of those negative thoughts, the self-doubt, the inadequacies. Won’t you as well?
I’m thankful for you. You are super the way you are.
