Weekly Wrap-Up

April10

I’m finally relaxing after a whirlwind week. Here’s what’s been going on:

014 I spent last Saturday shopping for the “Easter Bunny.” I’m so bad about waiting until the last minute. The store was crazy, but I was able to find everything I needed. Victory!

The children were out of school last week, so their sleep schedule was a bit off, Jumpshot especially. He couldn’t go to sleep Saturday night. I wonder if it had anything to do with not knowing what his present was going to be. So I asked him if he wanted to help set out the baskets for the first time ever. Sniff.

He loved it, and he loved his present, one of those NERF dartguns. Not surprisingly, he was asleep five minutes after playing Easter Bunny. He also helped the next morning getting batteries in the toys.

Diva was sweet enough to leave a note for the Easter Bunny, offering him her chocolate bunny she got earlier in the week and some flowers she picked in the yard. He was nice enough to take her tokens and leave her a thank you note and notes for the boys as well.

021Then we went to Mass and to my brother’s for lunch with the whole family. It was a very nice time, and the food was great as usual. The only thing that was missing was James. His allergies were bothersome, so when we got home from church, I gave him the only allergy medicine in the cabinet – Benadryl. Twenty minutes later, he was out of it. So he slept for a few hours.

On Monday, the kids were still on break, so James stayed home with them. While Jumpshot was cutting the grass, he came across a young king snake, which freaked him out. My boy is not a fan of nature. And even though James was right there with him and no harm was done, he was upset for a couple hours. They called me at work, so I talked to him and reassured him the snake wanted no part of the lawnmower. James said they spent the rest of the afternoon learning about snakes on the web.

024We went back to reality on Tuesday and was greeted with a ton of homework. Jumpshot was also forgetting to bring home things. Plus all year, he’s been losing pencils on a daily basis. James and I were quite perplexed. But at the end of the week, things became quite clear. Jumpshot is the go-to guy. He gives his pencils away to those who don’t have one, and he’s helping other kids with their homework, neglecting his. I applaud his generosity, but – and I told him this – it’s important to get his stuff taken care of first before he helps others.

Diva missed art class this week because of a sore throat. I checked her out of school early and took her back to my office and made her take a nap. She was much better after that. The pollen is driving everyone crazy.

038 Diva’s enjoying her homework, which is hilarious because for years she declared how much she was going to hate homework and never do it. Her handwriting is getting better, and she’s not reversing some of her letters and numbers as much. I did some math homework with her this week, and I got the pleasure of witnessing a lightbulb moment. When I would ask her how she would write 14 for instance, she would say 4-1 instead of 1-4. So I had to explain to her the tens place in essence. And she got it. It was fantastic!

Manchild hasn’t developed any new skills, but he’s getting goofier by the day. We were watching cartoons together Friday night, and he would repeat the lines from the show and put his face in mine as he did it. He let me hold his little hand and snuggle him. I cherish those little moments. He’s also pushing his boundaries. He told me he wanted some chocolate milk and to make it snappy. He thought it was funny. I did not. I gently informed him that wasn’t going to cut it. That’s happening a lot lately. He’s trying out phrases, and I let him know if it’s o.k. or not. Most of the time, they’re not.

James and I had another good date night. I like this ritual of ours. I am so appreciative of the drop-off center. I’ve learned parents need time together too. Don’t worry, I’m taking some time for myself. I got some workouts in this week and a couple naps.

Remember all you Supermoms out there: Cherish the special moments with your children. Make time for you and your husband, and take time for yourself. Enjoy your week!

Weekly Wrap-Up

March27
Sorry it’s been so long. Here’s what we’ve been up to the last couple weeks.
Hooray, we are finally over our colds! But there is no rest for the weary.
Jumpshot had to finish a novel to get all his points before the quarter ended. He worked so hard. Here he was reading and fell asleep. He did get all his points and discovered a new series of books he likes – Percy Jackson and the Olympians. However, he got a little disorganized at the end of the quarter and failed a test because he wasn’t prepared. So he lost his computer and gaming privileges for a few days. Looks like I need to help him with his organizational skills. 021
030 On a whim, we bought a couple male bettas. Meet Fin Blueberry Fish and Bubbles Flame Fish. Bubbles is the boys’ fish, and Fin is Diva’s fish. It’s funny how the fish’s temperaments match their respective owners.
Fin spends all day flaring all Bubbles. Bubbles either stares at Fin or just turns his back. I find them quite hilarious. I also find it funny when one of the fish spots the food on the other side of the partition and tries to get it and continuously bumps into the glass. I then have to point out the food on his side to the little guy.
Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting Dad’s friend, Ms. Genevieve. At their age, is girlfriend/boyfriend still appropriate? Either way, she’s really nice and friendly. We had a wonderful visit. They seem really happy together.
Well, it’s off to get something done around the house and put in a few hours at work. Love this Spring weather! Enjoy your week!

Sunday Share Time

March14

Today I’ve been in bed pretty much all day. I think I’ve developed a sinus infection. So what do I do when I’m in bed all day being sick? Watch TV of course. Here’s a list of what I’ve been watching:

1. Chowder. I still love cartoons. Sue me.

2. Ten Years of Blue Comedy. This has been running on CMT since last night. I think I’ve seen it a few times today. They are some funny guys, and I like to laugh.

3. Melissa Peterman – Am I the Only One? Although her voice is a little annoying, she still makes me laugh.

4. Spongebob Squarepants. Still loving cartoons.

5. Millionaire Matchmaker. Just a little.

6. Tales from the ER. Again just a little because that’s one show I really shouldn’t watch when I’m sick.

7. 60 minutes.

I’m surrendering and going to the doctor tomorrow. Time to get better. Enjoy your Sunday!

Weekly Wrap-Up

March6

007 It’s time for a review of what’s been happening in our house this week.

I’ve been working A LOT lately, and I am still hacking up a lung. I just read though that honey is a very good cough suppressant. Unfortunately I’m not a huge fan, so I’ll have to figure out how to make is palatable.

James is also recovering from a cold. He got to take a day off of work and got to take a 3-hour nap. Can you hear the jealousy dripping?

Speaking of jealousy, our Jumpshot got his first taste this week. A girl he’s liked for over a year has a boyfriend. He spotted them hugging. He said the sight of them tortured my body. Poor guy. He now refers to her as the girl he used to like. We’ve all been there, buddy. I got him an Icee to help take his mind off it.

Diva is planning a toy garage sale. I agreed to it one of those moments I was saying yes to everything because she was talking incessantly, and I thought she would forget. I was wrong – again. She’s also reading! It’s all so very exciting. She gets so proud of herself, and I’m proud of her too. And the day has come that she has dreaded for years – homework has begun. She’s actually enjoying it – like I told her she would.

Manchild has a new favorite word – underwear. Apparently it’s the funniest word ever. He uses the word all the time and just laughs and laughs. He’s also getting a little sneaky. He hid half his sandwich behind his back and made me believe his finished the whole thing.  Everyone else saw it and laughed at him, which is the worst thing you could do. Now he thinks it’s funny, and he’ll keep doing it.

Jumpshot has started track practice, and the first meet is next weekend. I’m booking my scrapbook day on the 20th, so I’ll have some more layouts to show you.

Don’t forget to turn your clocks forward an hour next week. It’s my least favorite day of the year.

Have a great week, everyone!

Weekly Wrap-Up

February28

008 It’s Weekly Wrap-Up, Sunday style. Can you guess that I’ve been working this weekend?

Although I haven’t had a lot of time to blog lately, I needed to get this week’s Wrap-Up done because the kids have been busy this week.

It’s our first week back from Winter Break. Only three weeks left of the third nine weeks. Goodness!

On Tuesday, Diva’s class had the Valentine’s Day party they were supposed to have on the 12th. School was canceled that day due to a threat of snow. They also had a pizza party that day for placing 2nd in the school’s fall fundraiser. Of course Diva insists I go to every class party, so I paid a visit and helped set up. She’s always happy to see me and always sad when I have to leave to go back to work. I did get a class hug before I left. They saw Diva hugging me and joined in.

005 Valentine’s Day apparently left a lasting impression on Manchild because he is still wishing us Happy Valentine’s Day. Tonight he asked me if he could give me a Valentine’s Day kiss. Well of course! Today was also his testing to see if he qualifies for pre-K. As you know, I’ve been anxious about the test, and we even rehearsed a couple questions, one being where Mom and Dad work.

He learned where Dad works but had trouble with my place of employment. In all fairness it’s rather lengthy. So the time came where the lady administering the test asked Manchild where does Dad work. Do you know what he said? He said Dad doesn’t work. The lady checked the application and saw that yes, James does have a job. So she asked him what does Dad do during the day? Manchild’s response: Watch TV.

James loved that.

The testing went well. I got to sit in and witness it all. And the verdict is that he’s going to pre-K. Yay!

004 But the biggest event of the week was the science fair. It was a lot of work. James and Jumpshot built an invincible Tic-Tac-Toe computer game. Jumpshot and I spent two nights decorating his display board. The Cricut came in very handy!

The science fair winners were awarded cash prizes: $75 for first place, $50 for second, and $25 for third. Jumpshot’s project was the most popular, but unfortunately he did not beat out the AM radio, the mummified hot dog, and whatever third place was. He was very upset. But we’re already planning for next year’s project, so watch out!

We used my computer for the display, and when we got home I immediately swabbed it down with alcohol. Die Germs! I already have a cold. I don’t need anything else. The thought of all those middle school children manhandling my computer. I wanted to burn it.

We ate out as a family on Friday. That went pretty well. No spills – for once. Diva had art class, which she is loving.

Next week, Jumpshot starts track for the first time. I steered Diva away from ballet because I heard the recitals last all day. Now I find out track meets last all day too. Someone neglected to tell me. But it’ll be o.k. That’s why we have two cars.

Have a great week!

Don’t Wake the Kids is a blog featuring Sally and sometimes James, a husband and wife team, talking about their life – the good, the bad, and the ugly.  Together, they will put their life on display, imperfections and all, with the hope that you will find it uplifting, entertaining, and amusing.

About Sally

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a mother. God blessed me with three wonderful children, who keep me going. My husband and I have been married for almost 12 years, and he’s my best friend.

I work full-time outside of the home and try to volunteer as much as I can at my children’s school. I love to bake and accidentally found out about cakepops, and I can’t stop making them. I love to scrapbook, when I find the time, but I’m still intimidated by 12×12 layouts. I also like to crochet, but I’ve only made scarves. I use it to pass the time while waiting at the doctor’s office or practice or for meetings to start.

I try to have it all, and I hope my blog lends support to other moms who mess up, want to pull out their hair, but who wouldn’t want to trade their lives for anything – just like me.

People ask me how do I do it all. I am always flattered by this, and my answer is always the same – I don’t sleep. I only get a lot done after everyone falls asleep. James came up with the name of our blog Don’t Wake The Kids because of my nocturnal nature.
